    Thank you for your comment.

Watford has confirmed there is space for the size of building needed and is aware that we will need to consider the implications for car parking. It will take some time to work through the exact details, but we are aware that this is an important issue and need to make sure we do everything we can to enable patients to access the site as easily as possible.

Watford are already planning a new multi-storey car park.  Subject to planning permission, this will increase patient and visitor car parking spaces from 1,611 to 1,694, which will include 72 new disabled bays.  The addition of the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre to the site would increase the need for car parking and as we develop plans, we will be talking to West Herts Hospitals and the Local Authority to see what options are available, and will involve patients fully before a final decision is made.

You are right - parking is a challenge at most hospital sites, including Mount Vernon at times.  We will be subject to planning permission for parking spaces at any location, so there will not be an easy, perfect solution.

However, we acknowledge that this is very important to patients and when we get to the design stage, we will work with patients to ensure we find the best solutions possible.

    Thank you for your question.

We are at an early stage in the review, and have a lot of work still to do, including discussions with transport services and the local authority about the impact of potentially moving the cancer centre to Watford.  Before we can do this in detail, we need to carry out a bit more work on what the final plan might look like.  For example, we are working with Hillingdon Hospitals to develop a chemotherapy unit at Hillingdon Hospital which will reduce the number of journeys from Hillingdon to Watford.  We would need to factor that into the discussions with transport providers as that will have an impact on transport requirements.

  • Share I'm 55 years old and live in Borehamwood on my own and have already had two cancer conditions in the past. If I get cancer again, I have no one around to drive me to any hospital. I also suffer from bad anxiety regarding getting to and from hospitals and parking OK etc or if I'm not able to drive I need to know how I can get there without using public transport as that's too stressful. So how accessible for Borehamwood and Elstree will the other hospitals be eg hillingdon - can I get taken there by volunteers etc and back if I'm not well enough to drive? What is parking like there? Thank you for your question.

Your concern is completely understandable. There is an option for using patient transport to get to appointments at the moment but we know that does not working well for everyone.

Transport is one of the key areas we are looking at in more detail and we will be seeing what we can do to provide more support to patients in your situation. If your cancer was treated at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in the past, you will most likely have had some of your treatment at Mount Vernon but most of your appointments at your local hospital. The only thing that will change in the future is where the treatment that is currently done at the Mount Vernon cancer centre takes place . The rest of your appointments would continue to be at your local hospital.

We are looking into moving the cancer centre to Watford, which is closer to Borehamwood and Elstree than it currently is in Northwood, so that is where the most specialist appointments would take place. But we know it is not just the distance that matters and will be looking at the patient transport experience for all patients, no matter how far they live from the potential new location of the cancer centre.

The arrangements at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre are complex as the centre depends on so many hospital services it does not provide itself, and never has, such as intensive care.  It relies on support from other hospital trusts, both on the site it leases and others further away. The changes to the wider site that have been made over many years, reflect changes in requirements of other services provided by the trust that owns the site. This review is concentrating on looking forward to ensure the Cancer Centre is fit for the next 40 years, rather than backwards at what has happened over the last 40 years. But we can learn from the past and ensure that we create a cancer centre with a secure future, if we receive the capital funding to make the changes that are needed.

Harrow CCG, and the North West London STP of which Harrow CCG is a member, are both included in the terms of reference for the MVCC Review Programme Board which agreed the recommended clinical model and the suggestion that only Watford Hospital met all the shortlisting critiera.  North West London was very much part of that discussion.  As we are not yet in a formal consultation, we do not have a formal response from the CCG. When we undertake public consultation, we will formally ask our CCG partners and other stakeholders to respond and will make their responses available. The earliest that public consultation will begin is summer 2021. Harrow CCG and North West London STP are also members of the Communications and Engagement Group.
