Radiotherapy Provision Work Group

The Radiotherapy Working Group is primarily for people who live in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire but is open to all who live within the Mount Vernon catchment area - especially those who have experienced radiotherapy treatment as patients or carers.

The focus group will look at what is important in a radiotherapy service, and what we do and do not need to consider in choosing a location for a possible second radiotherapy service in the area, which would be in addition to radiotherapy services at a new Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

The Programme Board is recommending a Networked Radiotherapy service in the north of the area served by Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. This means a stand-alone radiotherapy unit run by the Mount Vernon team on a second site (sometimes known as a satellite unit). The Programme Board has recommended this should be on a hospital site as access to other hospital services would increase the range of radiotherapy that could be provided. Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Luton and Dunstable Hospital in Luton, and East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, have both expressed an interest in a networked radiotherapy service being provided on their hospital site. As a result, both options will be included in the public consultation on the wider proposals.

This working group will begin look at these options in more detail as they are developed further.
